Reading aloud is widely recognized as the single most important activity leading to reading achievement. Therefore, the three elementary schools in the Bedford Public School District are continuing our mission to create a community of readers. We are once again participating in the community–wide book club, One District, One Book. We hope that everyone- families, teachers, bus drivers, secretaries, board members, and administrators will join us as we read The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies during March's National Reading Month.

Thumbnail image of cover of Lemonade War book

Fourth-grader Evan Treski is people-smart. He's good at talking with people, even grownups. His younger sister, Jessie, on the other hand, is math-smart, but not especially good with people. So when the siblings' lemonade stand war begins, there really is no telling who will win—or even if their fight will ever end.

The youngest child in each family will receive a copy of The Lemonade War and a reading calendar. We anticipate that families will enjoy reading a few pages of the book together as a family each night. You will want to make sure that your family follows the reading schedule so your child can be included in school discussions each day.

Finally, we would like to recognize the Bedford Lions Club, the Bedford Youth Advisory Committee, and the elementary schools' PTA and PTO organizations for their financial assistance. Because of their generosity, we were able to purchase a copy of The Lemonade War for each elementary family in our district.

We look forward to having conversations about lemonade sales! "When a whole community reads a book, there's a lot to talk about." With your help, we can build a Community of Readers in Bedford!

Getting Your School Closing/Delay and Emergency Alerts?

Keep your phone numbers/email current by contacting the school office if any changes are needed to the contact information that appears in HAC. It is important that this information is up-to-date so you can be reached if necessary. It is used by our Honeywell Instant Alert system which is the official means of communication with families in the event of an emergency.

Junior Achievement at MRE

We're currently seeking volunteers for our Junior Achievement program. We need a few more local business leaders from the Bedford community to assist with this community program.

Volunteers will be assigned a classroom, and work with the teacher to schedule five lessons to teach MRE students about entrepreneurship. The curriculum and lessons are all provided. This is a great opportunity for local business leaders to positively influence MRE students.

For more information, please see the documents using the Parent Update Folder link on the left or contact Steffany Sass.

Food Service News

Bedford Public Schools has been fortunate to have a donor pay off all students' negative food service balances through January 22, 2018. Inspired by this person's generosity, accounts have been set up at each school to receive donations from anyone else interested in ensuring that our students can enjoy a healthy meal every day at school. Stop by the school office if you wish to make a similar donation.

Please be sure to check your student's account via My MealTime (use the link on the left) on a weekly basis so we can prevent further excessive charging. (Tip: Set a low balance alert in your profile!)

Families can also apply for Free and Reduced School Meals at any time during the school year. Online applications can be completed through MyMealtime, and paper forms are available in each school office, or can be printed here. All student transactions at the cafeteria cash register appear identical regardless of whether students are paying full price, receiving reduced prices, or free meals, to protect the confidentiality of program participation. It's a win-win situation: the students benefit from the healthy food at breakfast and lunch with families keeping more of their hard earned money, and schools can benefit from federal funding and programs that become available based on family participation in the school meal program.

State Unveils New Parent Dashboard

Michigan Parent Dashboard for School Transparency; Your Window to Important School Information and Facts logo

Parents now have their own online dashboard that shows the performance of all K-12 public schools in Michigan and represents a new, improved level of transparency

The Parent Dashboard for School Transparency, available at https://www.mischooldata.org/ParentDashboard, is a combined effort of MDE and the Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) – based on significant parent feedback on its planning, content, and design.

The dashboard allows deeper dives into the performance of various groups of students, such as gender, race, subject, and services to students.

You can always find the direct link for Monroe Road Elementary School's information on the left under "School Data" for the "MI Parent Dashboard for School Transparency."
